Réalisation d'un interféromètre atomique Stern-Gerlach à partir d'un jet supersonique d'argon métastable polarisé et analysé par lasers

Abstract : This work describes the building and first results obtained with a Stern-Gerlach atomic interferometer using a supersonic beam of metastable argon atoms, spin-polarised and analysed with lasers. Its performances are compared to those of a similar interferometer using a hyperthermal beam of metastable hydrogen. To set up a Stern-Gerlach interferometer, an atomic beam in a high-vacuum chamber is needed. The atoms have to be spin-polarised, and, after crossing a well-controlled magnetic field region, spin-analysed. This is done thanks to diode lasers locked on atomic lines associated to fibre optics. Two wavelength are used : one around 812 nm, sigma polarised, the other near 801 nm, pi polarised. The magnetic fields in the interferometer core are created by electrical coils surrounded by a magnetic shielding. Using a position sensitive detector, we have demonstrated the high sensitivity of this set-up when used with a supersonic beam instead of an effusive beam. The interference signal is then much more sensitive to the magnetic profile details. This property is confirmed by the apparition of unexpected structures in the interference patterns, linked to geometrical phase effects caused by the evolution of a spin 2 in a conical magnetic field. These results allow us to contemplate the use of this interferometer in the field of atom lithography, as well as for more fundamental studies on quantum phases.
