Le rôle médiateur de la verbalisation entre les aspects figuraux et théoriques dans un problème de démonstration en géométrie plane

Abstract : Our research concentrates mainly on analysing the influence of natural language on the relationships between graphical and theoretical domain in the solving process of a 2D geometry problem. We started from two hypotheses : the first one considers the natural language as a tool for the researcher, for revealing the student's processes, the second one considers the natural language as a tool for the student to solve the problem. The natural language is considered also as tool of mediation for the construction and the development of thinking. In addition, a third hypothesis assumes that the development of the solving process depends on the evolution of the verbal exchanges (move from the mode of accumulation to the mode of substitution), and on the evolution of values of propositions (move from an epistemological value to a logical value). In this research we propose to point out this evolution by analysing students' verbal exchanges. This is done by taking into account the “linguistic units” related to the modalities of discourse progression. Characterising the language functions allowed us to estimate the relative importance of the role of those functions on the progress of the solving process. The analysis of language as a tool for problem solving leads to distinguish different functions of language in the solving processes: the guidance function (that occurs when theorems or definitions are verbalized), the function of planning (plan of a chain of deductions) the control function (linked to the guide function, it allows us to came back to the steps of deduction) the reference and association functions (linked to key words or key configurations). This analysis also allowed us to determine the conditions for those functions to appear.
