Evolution de la qualité de l'eau dans les mines abandonnées du bassin ferrifère lorrain. De l'expérimentation en laboratoire à la modélisation in situ

Abstract : In the last twenty years, the closure of iron mines of Lorraine led to progressive flooding of the workings. The consequences on groundwater are a modification of flowpaths and a degradation of the quality of water. In this context, the aims of this work were to characterize the evolution of the quality of groundwater during and after the flooding, to determine its causes and to give the bases of a water management aid tool. A knowledge synthesis on mining drainage, and most specifically on chemical mechanisms that are the cause of it, was realised. We then focused on the particular case of the Lorrain Iron Basin (LIB). An experimental study was conducted in laboratory on rock samples collected in mines of the northern part of the LIB. This work included a mineralogical study, closed reactors tests, with monitoring of gas composition, and leaching columns experiments. This study allowed us to characterize the evolution of the water quality when the water is in contact with rocks of the LIB : nature, duration and probable mineralogical origin of the pollution. Based on these results, a kinetic chemical model was built, and integrated in an ideal stirred tank reactor model. These simulators reproduce the concentrations observed in water at the end of the closed reactors tests and during the leaching columns experiments. We proposed a scenario for explaining the evolution of water chemical content in contact of LIB rocks. Finally, on this basis, a numerical simulator was built in order to reproduce the evolution of the quality of water at the overflow point of the southern sector of the LIB, abandoned since 1995.
