Abstract : Sensors have benefited of the recent progress in microelectronics which makes it now possible to integrate in a reduced volume both the sensor, the conditioning analogue electronics and the digital circuits for data processing and external communication. But the smart sensor goes far beyond this simple juxtaposition, it can extract the information for diagnosis, it integrates services to fully participate to a distributed decision system, which components all cooperate through a communication system, thus constituting a real time data base. This work introduces the concept of smart sensor through many examples taken from the own experience of the author, starting from sensors based on a piezo-polymer for industrial applications, to home automation systems for home health care and autonomous sensors for telemedicine applications.
