Abstract : This thesis deals with 3d shapes construction. We use a sculpture metaphor, with direct surface manipulation and no control structure related to the underlying surface representation, which remains hidden. Our approach is based on a volumetric representation. The surface being modelled is the iso-surface of a 3d discrete scalar field. This transparently handles the topology changes over the surface. A first prototype, based on a regularly sampled field, helped us to validate the direct surface interaction concepts, using a tool controlled with a 3d input device. The surface evolves indirectly through the scalar field modifications induced by the tool. But from a user view, the tool freely deposits or removes material in space. Using selection and copy/paste, we are able to build new tools of any shape. We also considered some surface perception enhancements, such as visualisation (stereo, reflects) and haptic feedback. These are important cues for the shape estimation along the construction process. Our second prototype uses a hierarchical and adaptive representation that allows editions at different scales, while maintaining interactive update and display. The sampling rate of the scalar field dynamically and automatically adapts itself, guided by the tool used. The priority queue based field update we propose allows extensions to multiple tools that may be controlled from distant machines.
