Les formes des villes européennes vues du ciel. Une contribution de l'image CORINE Land cover à la comparaison morphologique des grandes villes d'Europe occidentale.

Abstract : Since the past ten years, the issue of urban shape has been of importance when considering the future of European cities. This issue does not only address the urban sprawl process, but also the notion of an urban sustainable development and it takes place within the debate about the validity of a compact city model.

Many contradictory arguments have been discussed about the shape of cities throughout the last century. None of these arguments have nevertheless ever been sustained by any comparable measurement, as the implementation of consistent databases about European cities is still in progress. In the context of built-up areas, CORINE Land cover image is an original source, which indeed allows to provide consistent measurements of the compactness of cities : their spatial filling degree (extent and density) and the description of the urban footprint. Both dimensions of the morphological compactness are complementary to characterize the diversity of European cities.

The urban field model still remains a strong principle governing the organization of urban areas, which consists in a very contrasted gradient in built-up areas, and a weaker gradient in exurban areas. Smoothing was also applied in order to generalize built-up areas images and render the hierarchical structure of human settlements at different scales. This first exploratory step yielded some results that should be confronted to the next version of CORINE, due in 2004.
