Impacts de l'Enherbement du Vignoble Alsacien sur le Transfert des Nitrates.

Abstract : The water quality of the Alsacian aquifer degrades principally because of nitrates. This pollution originates partly from the vineyard situated in the Piemont area of the Vosges massif which is a preferential zone of aquifer recharge. The main objective of the Enherbement du Vignoble Alsacien (EVA) project is to quantify the impact of an agri-environmental technique : to put grass in one out of two vine inter rows. The methodology of this work is based on the association of two approaches : field experiment and physical modelling. Two vine plots were chosen at Rouffach (Haut-Rhin, France). Both were instrumented and monitored from May 1998 to October 2000. One represents a witness plot, with chemical weeding in the inter row and the other one has a grass cover on one out of two inter rows. The field approach tried to assess the main terms of water and nitrogen balances. Furthermore the water and nitrate uptakes of the different covers (grass and vine) were simulated by using Riou et al (1989) evapotranspiration algorithm and the agricultural model STICS (Brisson et al, 1998). Then the modelling approach consisted in adapting the SWMS_3D model (Simunek et al, 1995), that simulates the water flow and solute transport in three dimension): It was necessary to introduce a second uptake algorithm (grass cover), and the kinetic reaction equation linked to nitrate transformations were modified. The field and model results show that the grass cover technique reduces nitrate leachate five times. This reduction is the consequence of a water drainage decrease by 30% and of a nitrates concentration decrease in water soil solution under grass cover. The grass cover also influences the rainfall redistribution in soil, which could cause some water stress to vine.
