Conception, élaboration et caractérisation d'un matériau composite à matrice de titane renforcée par des fibres continues de carbone

Abstract : Titanium matrix composites reinforced by continuous carbon fibers have been prepared using a powder metallurgy method that use for a part techniques derived from ceramic and polymer matrix composite processing. Difficulties encountered during the processing were overcome through specific studies concerning the preparation of fine titanium powders, infiltration of powders within carbon meshes, binder burn out, consolidation and densification of the titanium matrix under pressure and temperature. The validity of the process has been demonstrated. However, the lack of very fine particles did not allow the volume fraction of carbon fibers to be higher than 10% which limits the reinforcement effect during tensile tests. On the other hand, the use of micronic titanium hydride particles allowed the volume fraction to reach 30%.
