Composition Dynamique d'Informations dans le Cadre de la Communication Homme Machine – La problématique de la Pertinence dans la CHM

Abstract : Users of information systems, when engaged in search, selection and reading activities, are often overloaded with huge amounts of information. This situation is even worse when information arrives in continuous streams, such as in industrial supervision systems.
In order to help the users in such situations, the approach suggested here is a system that can take the initiative to adapt presentation of information. The purpose is to reduce the efforts the users have to make to perceive and interpret information. This approach considers the information presentation as the result of an information process, composition, achieved by an agent, the Compositor Agent, which try to cooperate with users.
First, we introduce the problematic of adaptation of information presentation in the context of industrial supervision, with an application about the management of an electrical network. Then, a state of current research concerning operator modelling in supervision, adaptive interfaces and mixed-initiative systems is presented. The Compositor Agent is guided in its choice of presentation adaptation by a property, relevance. A definition and a formal model are proposed. Based on this formal model, a critical analysis of the European project AMEBICA (Auto-adaptive Multimedia Environment Based on Intelligent Collaborating Agents) which we worked on, is proposed and improvements are therefore suggested.
