Etude théorique et expérimentale du comportement thermohydrodynamique des garnitures d'étanchéité

Abstract : Mechanical face seals are some of the sealing devices of rotating shafts. They often operate under severe speed, pressure and temperature conditions when elastomer seals can not be used. The optimal operating point is obtained when the seal rings are separated by a thin fluid film to avoid faces wear while the leakage rate value remains acceptable. Seal faces lubrication is greatly influenced by the temperature rise due to viscous friction. Thermal phenomena play an essential role in mechanical face seals and constitute the subject of this thesis. From a detailed bibliographical analysis, assumptions necessary to the thermoelastohydrodynamic modelisation of mechanical face seals have been determined. The steady state general governing equations in the fluid film are solved by the finite element method. The resolution of the energy equation required the use of a numerical scheme adapted to convection problems. Heat transfer in seal rings and thermal distortions are taken into account by influence coefficients. The three-dimensional pressure, temperature and velocity fields in the fluid for laminar and turbulent fluid flow are calculated by an iterative algorithm. The parametric study carried out with the numerical model contributes to the better understanding of the influence of operating conditions, of design parameters and of geometrical defects on the performances of mechanical face seals. Moreover, numerical results have been validated by comparison with experimental data obtained by infrared thermal imaging on a new experimental seal.
