L'optique adaptative du Telescope Canada France Hawaii et son utilisation pour l'etude des coeurs de galaxies a flambee d'etoiles

Abstract : Adaptive optics is a technique used to correct dynamic aberrations introduced by atmospheric turbulence on astronomical images in real time. Instruments have now reached a maturity such that second generation systems are emerging. The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope has developed a curvature based adaptive optics system. Its integration and characteriszation in a laboratory environment and on the sky constitute the first part of this dissertation. The philosophy and methodology of integration are presented as well as the results of the tests. These allow to determine the performance of the instrument, which are excellent and agree with the expected behavior over the whole rangeof observing conditions. A study of starburst galaxies makes up the second part of the dissertation. Adaptive optics is a priviliged technique to observe these objects for two reasons: first bursts of star formation occur in gas and dust-rich regions, where the optical depth is less in the infrared than in the visible. This is also the wavelength range where the adaptive optic's correction is most efficient. Second, these objects are far away and high angular resolution is necessary to have access to the finer details of their morphology, and this is the whole point of adaptive optics: to increase the resolution by reducing the blur introduced by atmospheric turbulence. Results obtained with the two adaptive optics instruments open to the astrophysical community are presented: eleven galaxies (NGC 863, NGC 1068, NGC 1365, NGC 1386, NGC 5033, NGC 5953, NGC 7469, NGC 7714, Markarian 231, Markarian 565 and Arp 299) have been observed, and each case is replaced within the context of the unified model for active galactic nuclei. Morevover, evidence for new phenomena is shown, as well as confirmation for suspected mechanisms (bar within bars, star super-clusters, thightly wound spiral arms).
