Etude de l'oxydation et de la tenue d'élastomères irradiés : conséquences sur l'intégrité des câbles électriques lors d'une situation accidentelle d'un réacteur à eau pressurisée

Abstract : This thesis contributes to a better understanding and predictions of the consequences of electronic irradiation on the electrical cables when an accident of a pressurized water reactor occurs. We studied the radiooxidation and the mechanical behaviour of two irradiated elastomers, EPDM (ethylene-propylene-hexadiene 1,4 terpolymer) and hypalon (chlorosulfonated polyethylene), used respectively as insulating and sheath material of the cable. In the first part, the conditions of exposure to radiation during an accident are presented. They induce a very heterogeneous dose profile in the cable because of the low range of the involved electrons. This situation contrasts with normal operating conditions of the power plant and corresponding qualification tests. In the latter case, the profile is uniform since it is deposited by g- rays with large ranges. The second part focuses on degradation under presence of oxygen, with typical dose and dose rate conditions for an accident. Thin films of the two elastomers (basic and formulated polymers) are irradiated by electrons and the oxidation products, and their concentrations are determined chemically. The influence, on the kinetics of radiooxidation, of three parameters typical for the irradiation, the oxygen pressure, the dose rate and the dose is presented there. The effect of antioxidants is studied in the case of EPDM. The third part describes the results concerning the experimental simulation of the dose profile during the accident on thick plates of two formulated elastomers. The evolution of the breaking mechanical properties, as a function of dose and the thickness of the plates, is presented and analysed in correlation with the oxidation profiles.
