APPROCHES STATISTIQUES - PROBABILISTES DU COMPORTEMENT MÉCANIQUE DES COMPOSITES À MATRICE CÉRAMIQUE

Abstract : Statistical and probabilistic approaches to the mechanical behaviour of ceramic matrix composites, based on the description of the stochastic phenomena responsible for matrix fragmentation and ultimate failure, are developed. They were applied to unidirectional and woven SiC/SiC composites. They allow prevision of the mechanical behaviour and the ultimate failure both in tensile and in bending tests. The matrix cracking approach is based on the description of the distribution of the flaw populations controlling matrix cracking. In the unidirectional SiC/SiC composites, a single flaw population was sufficient to calculate the mechanical behaviour. For the woven SiC/SiC composites, three flaw populations are responsible for matrix cracking. A classification of failure features, based on the scale effect and the successive failure of specimen under tensile load, is proposed for the selection of the ultimate failure model (Weibull, Ergodic ...). Thus, the ergodic character of the failure of a SiC/SiC composite was shown using 3-point and 4-point bending tests.
