Copolymères diblocs chargés aux interfaces liquides

Abstract : We have experimentally studied assemblies of poly( tert-butylstyrene)/poly(styrene-sulfonate) copolymers in various situations at the air-water and alcane-water interfaces. After a short presentation of the scientific framework of our study, the copolymers we used are characterized in detail, and the three experimental situations that we investigated are described: copolymer monolayers at the air-water interface, monolayers at the oil-water interface, and emulsions formed by the oil/water/copolymer system. Copolymer monolayers at the air-water interface are studied in a Langmuir trough using neutron reflectivity. The density profile of the polyelectrolyte brush is hence very precisely determined, with and without salt. Monolayers at the oil-water interface are studied using grazing incidence X-ray scattering, thanks to a Langmuir trough that we designed specifically for this type of measurements. The bending rigidity of the interface can be estimated and multilayers formed upon the compression of monolayers of the most symmetrical copolymer are observed. Oil(cyclohexane or toluene)-in-water microemulsions stabilized by copolymers have been formed and the micelles' structure has been characterized using small-angle neutron scattering. Spherical micelles are observed, made of a core containing similar amounts (in volume) of oil and units of the copolymers' hydrophobic blocs, and a corona composed of highly stretched polyelectrolytes. The structure of the corona as well as that of the core can be modified by addition of salt. A foamy macroemulsion is formed along with the microemulsion, and it is also very stable and sensitive to salt.
