Abstract : The new experimental results about nuclei at the limits of stability have motivated the search for new nuclear models. In this work, we have further applied the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum, which takes into account both correlations between the nucleons and the coupling to the non-resonant continuum. This model has been used to study the spectra of 17 F and 17 O, as well as to calculate 16 O (p,gamma) 17 F radiative capture cross section and 16 O (p,p) 16 O elastic scattering cross section. The reaction 16 O (p,gamma) 17 F is of astrophysical relevance, as it plays an important role in the formation of light elements in stars. The first forbidden beta transitions in the mirror systems 17 Ne -> 17 F and 17 N -> 17 O have also been investigated. Indeed, using the same Hamiltonian, one can investigate in the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum various structure and reaction observables.
In this work, we have also introduced the Gamow Shell Model for the description of weakly bound or particle unstable nuclei. This model is a generalization of the usual Shell Model, as its complete basis consists of bound, resonant and scattering states. Furthermore, contrary to the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum, the emission of several correlated particles can be described. The spectra of both the oxygen isotopes from 17 O to 22 O, as well as the helium isotopes from 5 He to 9 He have been studied, where the continuum is respectively non-negligible and crucial. The electromagnetic transitions and valence particle densities have also been considered. We have shown that this model can be used in practical applications, which is an interesting feature as it has the generality of the Shell Model and at the same time has no restriction concerning the number of particles in the continuum.
