Analyse et optimisation du traitement de l'azote par boues activées à basse température

Abstract : The main objective of this work concerned the optimization of design and operation of activated sludge wastewater treatment plants operating at low temperature (10-12°C) while enhanced nitrogen removal is required. The feasibility of nitrification at steady F/M ratios above 0.1 kgBOD5.(kgMLVSS.d)-1 for intermittently aerated plants was investigated by an approach that combined experiments and mathematical modelling. The behaviour of a pilot plant operated under well-controlled temperature and loading conditions, and fed by synthetic influent and by real domestic wastewater was monitored. The highly detailed results collected during two periods of six months helped us to clarify the magnitude of influence of the main factors (sludge retention time, nitrogen volumetric load, daily aeration time) on nitrification capacity. The Activated Sludge Model n°1 was used as a dynamic simulation tool. Its parameters describing the nitrifier growth were adapted to be able to reproduce the experimental observations. This work highlighted the influence of the operating conditions (sludge age, nitrogen volumetric loading, daily aerobic time) and of the influent characteristics (typical ratios, fractions) on the nitrogen removal performance and the sludge composition. The threshold values of operating parameters (maximum F/M ratio, daily aeration time) were determined to maintain the effluent total nitrogen concentration below 10 mgN/L, for plants with a single tank and for those with a predenitrification tank. Best operation strategies were defined for plants with strong influent load variation (case of tourist resorts), by either keeping a fixed volume and increasing the F/M ratio and the aeration time, or by using a variable volume tank.
