Simulateur Monte Carlo et caméra à xénon liquide pour la tomographie à émission de positons

Abstract : The studies presented in this thesis have been conducted in the context of the metabolic and functionnal medical imaging of small animals.They lead us to developp a Monte Carlo simulator (GePEToS) based on GEANT 4 dedicated to PET systems. GePEToS has been tested and validated by comparison to real and published data obtained with an ECAT EXACT HR+ following the NEMA protocol. The objectives of such a simulator are to produce PET data for the test of image reconstruction algorithms and to allow the exploration of new detector configurations.
On the other hand, this thesis concerned the conception of a liquid xenon camera for smallanimal PET imaging system (µPET). A complete Monte Carlo simulation allowed us to optimize and presented the performance of a µPET detector which would be composed of 16 detection modules arranged as a ring around the animal. The originality of this detector lies in his ability to measure the depth of interaction for every detected photon (still inaccessible for PET detectors currently commercialized). An important party of R&D consisted in developing and using the cryogenic system of the liquid xenon as well as has in defining the photodetection system of the scintillation light UV of the xenon (Lambda = 178 nm). A prototype module was realized to detect the annihilation photons.
