Caractérisation et implantation des photomultiplicateurs du calorimètre à tuiles scintillantes d'ATLAS. Mesure des énergies des jets dans ATLAS.

Abstract : This thesis deals with different aspects of the ATLAS hadronic calorimetry. It is first concerned with the photomultipliers of the scintillating tile calorimeter. The 1000 first of them have been characterised with a dedicated test bench. The presented results show that the quality of the measurements are very good and that the chosen photomultipliers satisfy the requirements of the collaboration. The study of their integration in the calorimeter leads to class the photomultipliers in different sets corresponding to different types of calorimeter cells in order to meet all the experimental constraints. Retained by the collaboration, the proposed classification is taken into account in the calorimeter assembly. In a second time, this thesis deals with the measurement of jet energies in ATLAS. On the basis of a complete simulation of the detector response, it first shows that the calibration methods used in test beams for pions can be adapted to jets in ATLAS. It is so possible to reproduce the energy of reference to within less than 1 % while minimising the resolution with respect to this latter. The obtained resolutions are compatible with the goals of the collaboration notably thanks to a weighting of cell energies allowing to take into account the non-compensation of the calorimeters. The in situ calibration of the detector response to jets through Z0 + jet events is then considered. According to the presented analysis, the absolute jet energy scale and the resolutions on jet transverse momentum measurements can be determined to within respectively 1 %, which is the goal fixed by the collaboration, and 1 GeV=c making use only of measurable quantities, notably to correct the effects of initial state radiations on the used transverse momentum constraint.
