Etude du bruit quantique dans les lasers à semi-conducteurs (VCSELs et diodes laser)

Abstract : We study in detail the quantum noise in a new type of semiconductor lasers: the VCSELs (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers). These lasers can operate with various transverse modes with different polarisations above threshold. When only one transverse mode linearly polarised oscillate, we demonstrate experimentally as well as theoretically that one has to take into account the noise of the modes orthogonally polarised under threshold to characterise the intensity noise. When two transverse modes linearly and orthogonally polarised oscillate, we study the transverse spatial structure of the intensity noise. We develop a quantum model which correctly gives the intensity noise appearance.

We also study in this thesis the quantum noise in laser diodes. Compared to the theoretical predictions of the standard two level laser theory, the experimental results exhibt an excess noise at high driving current. We demonstrate experimentally as well as theoretically that this excess noise is due to current fluctuations inside the laser diode.
