I), j'ai présenté le projet SAURON (Spectrographic Areal Unit for Research on Optical Nebulae), entrepris en collaboration avec l'Observatoire de Leiden (Pays-Bas) et l'Université de Durham (Grande-Bretagne) Ce projet s'articule autour du nouveau spectrographe intégral de champ (SIC) du même nom, instrument totalement unique en son genre par ses capacités 3D

. Mais, gazeuse que des populations stellaires Cela suppose une démarche stricte, de la construction d'un échantillon représentatif de galaxies à observer à une réduction et une analyse homogènes des données et à l'interprétation sur une base théorique commune des résultats. D'un point de vue observationnel, le projet SAURON est maintenant bien entamé, avec l'acquisition de plus de vingt galaxies parmi l'échantillon prévu de ¥ 80 Au rythme actuel de deux missions par an, les observations devraient être achevées d'ici fin 2002. En revanche, la partie interprétation ne fait que commencer (voir plus bas), et nul doute que l'analyse un tant soit peu détaillée de cette quantité astronomique de données promet encore quelques heures de travail. Réduction et analyse des données SIC Les données issues d'un SIC de type TIGER (p.ex. OASIS ou SAURON) demandent une méthode de réduction tout à fait particulière. Dans l'optique d'une mise à plat des algorithmes utilisés, j'ai décrit (Chap. II) l'ensemble des étapes suivies dans la réduction des données de type TIGER, et plus particulièrement des données SAURON, Une telle présentation exhaustive sera sans aucun doute d'une certaine utilité pour les futures générations de spectrographes intégraux de champ (p.ex. projet SNIFS), si l'on considère en outre que les présentations, partielles, faites par PÉCONTAL, p.et ROUSSET, 1991.

Au-delà-de-la-réduction-À-proprement-parler, III) l'ensemble des outils déployés pour l'analyse des spectres galactiques, permettant d'extraire de ces derniers les quantités physiques pertinentes : je me suis personnellement impliqué dans la mesure de la distribution des vitesses stellaires le long de la ligne de vue, observation fondamentale pour l'étude de la dynamique des galaxies, mais j'ai également
