LA TRANSFORMATION D'ÉTAT DE CHARGE 1+/n+ POUR L'ACCELERATION DES IONS RADIOACTIFS

Abstract : Radioactive ions are produced by bombardment of a target with a primary beam of protons, neutrons or stable ions. In order to accelerate radioactive ion beams to an energy of a few Mev per nuclei, the ions have to be multi-ionized. The principle of the 1+/n+ method is to dissociate the production of the radioactive elements from the multi-ionization process. A production target of radioactive elements is associated to a source of monocharged ions. The 1+ radioactive ion beam produced by this target-ion source is injected at low energy (a few tens of keV) into an Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) multicharged ion source. The monocharged ions are electrostatically decelerated in the n+ source and captured by the ECR plasma. They are multi-ionized step by step to high charge states, extracted and accelerated. The experiments shown in this thesis have been performed with stable elements. The 1+/n+ method can work in continuous mode : the monocharged ion beam is injected continuously into the n+ source and the multicharged ion beam is produced continuously. The 1+/n+ charge breeding efficiencies are given : about ten percents for rare gases and several percents for condensable elements. The duration of the 1+/n+ charge breeding is about hundred milliseconds which is fast enough for most of the radioactive elements to be produced. These results show that the 1+/n+ method is well suitable for a system of production of accelerated radioactive ions. The 1+/n+ method can also work in pulsed mode : the monocharged ion beam is injected continuously into the n+ source and the multicharged ion beam is produced in bunches lasting each a few milliseconds. The charge breeding efficiencies are around one percent for rubidium and lead. Further studies are necessary on this operating mode in order to improve the present results.
