Etude et réalisation d'un circuit intégré spécifique de mise en forme de signaux délivrés par un détecteur pour une expérience de physique des particules

Abstract : Part of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the ALICE detector will be dedicated to the study of the Quark Gluon Plasma, a state of deconfined matter, from 2006. The trigger system of the ALICE Dimuon Spectrometer is divided into 72 Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) running in streamer mode, with 21 000 signal channels. A first prototype of a specific integrated circuit, which shapes the detector output signals, has been studied and designed. Its role is to produce logical data with a good time precision, when the input signal corresponds to the expected pulse shape. Designed using 0,8 µm AMS BiCMOS technology, it includes the following functions : a dual threshold discrimination technique called ADULT, a latching system that forbids any unexpected trigger over a 100ns period of time, a tunable delay and a pulse shaping and an ECL driver.
The general scheme has been divided into different cells designed and simulated. The layout required for the wafer manufacturing has been made with great care in order to improve the performance, as well the quantity of silicon used.
Fifteen prototype circuits have been tested with a test bench in laboratory and with a particle beam at CERN. The results show that the cells designed carry out the required functions, and that the ADULT system noticeably increases the time resolution. The power consumption will be lowered to 100mW per channel by introducing a LVDS driver in the chip.
This study has shown the feasibility of an integrated circuit suitable for the specific RPC pulses in streamer mode, matching the requirements of cost and power consumption.
