Transitions de mouillage des alcanes sur l'eau : rôle des interactions entre interfaces

Abstract : WETTING TRANSITIONS OF ALKANES ON WATER: Influence of interfacial interactions. This study concerns the influence of interfacial interactions on wetting transitions. It is based on the experimental investigation of the wetting properties of alkanes on water. A study by ellipsometry confirms that, in the considered systems, the usual wetting transition between partial wetting (at low temperatures) and complete wetting (at high temperatures) is replaced by a sequence of two transitions: a first-order wetting transition followed by a critical wetting transition. The intermediate wetting state between the two transitions has been dubbed ?frustrated-complete wetting? as it corresponds to a mesoscopic wetting film, prevented from being macroscopic only by the van der Waals interactions. The measured first-order wetting transition temperature agrees with a calculation within the phenomenological Cahn theory, modified to take into account the low adsorption states. The critical wetting transition follows from the interfacial interaction due to the intermolecular van der Waals forces. It is described theoretically within the DLP theory, which enables to calculate precisely the critical wetting temperature. Addition of a surfactant (AOT) considerably lowers the alkane/water surface tension, which increases the amplitude of the thermal fluctuations of the corresponding interface. It enables one to study quantitatively the interfacial entropic repulsion due to thermal fluctuations and its influence on the critical wetting transition. Finally, the oil recovery rate after gravity drainage through a hydrophilic porous medium saturated with water is measured as a function of the wetting state of oil on water.
