Abstract : We show interest in nonrigid motion analysis in medical imaging. After a brief overview of the existing methods, we make use of an elastically-deformable model which evolves in the images under the action of external forces pulling the model towards the object edges. The model is governed by Lagrangian dynamics. It allows nonrigid motion tracking of the object contour : thus the model is a curve when we deal with twodimensional images, and a surface when we study three-dimensional images. In order to analyze and quantify the deformation of the model, we make use of the modal analysis technique. In this technique, a change of basis to the free vibration basis of the system is performed ; in the new modal basis, the governing equations are more simple, and also, a closed-form recovery is provided by discarding the high-frequency components of the motion. Modal analysis allows the spectral representation of deformations, and their comparison and classification for automatic diagnosis purposes. When coupled with Fourier analysis, it yields an efficient spatio-temporal analysis of deformable surfaces (e.g. heart wall motion), thus illustrating the power of the approach for nonrigid motion analysis and compression. Several examples of processing on medical images are presented.
