Réseaux d'observation sociale. Caractérisation et performance

Abstract : « Social observation » is the study of the social dimension of organisations. The systems of social observation have their objective to inform management about the social dynamic within the company or organisation. This information allows the enrichment of social dialogue and accompanies organisational change. The managerial challenge involved in social observation is concerned with the integration of the social variable in the process of company management and regulation. This thesis describes each system of social observation as a network. The analysis of social observation consists, therefore, of characterising the morphology of this network and the relationships between the participants within it. Further, the described research puts foward an evaluative model of the performance of a social observation system based on a mesure of satisfaction perceived by its users. The empirical results, obtained in a large public service organisation, show that the performance of a social observation network is linked to the position and the strategy of the participants. The different factors in the performance of a social observation network are identified. A morphological and longitidinal study shows that, under certain incentive conditions, the interaction between participants creates positive effects, namely the exploitation of known social regulatory channels and the exploration of new social relationships. The efficiency of a social observation network is the result of long and patient effort in its construction, which will facilitate the compatibility of projects and interests which were, at first sight, incompatible. Rather than a method for the production of social knowledge, the challenge for social observation is in the search for complementarity between individual and collective performance, between social plan and economic performance.
