Travailler l'oral à travers l'utilisation du téléphone portable et d'Internet

Abstract : This research focuses on the field of foreign language teaching and learning and refers to French speaking practice supported by mobile technology. Following the principles of action research, we designed a didactic scenario for Korean learners allowing them to practice speaking French freely anytime and anywhere. South Korea’s culture is permeated by Confucian philosophy which can also be recognized in the classroom relationship. The “disciples” are often supposed to follow their “master” and teaching is mainly focused on knowledge transmission and writing. In order to enhance oral skills, we proposed a didactic scenario where learning takes place outside a formal course but supported by a tutor. Two experiments were conducted in 2008 and 2010 with two groups of Korean adult learners of French residing in Korea. The learners perform language tasks through video recordings that are sent to a native speaker of French residing in France via an online social network (Cyworld). Through the use of mobile Internet access, an asynchronous oral communication takes place which allows the learners to train their speaking skills. During the learning process the learners can retake their recordings several times and ask the tutor for assistance. The results of the interviews we conducted with the participants and our analyses of their recordings show that our scenario motivate and encourage the learners to practice French. They became more self-confident by the fact that they could prepare their recordings and repeat their production several times. Thanks to the use of mobile devices, the learners could choose a convenient time and comfortable place to accomplish the given tasks. Nevertheless, our findings didn’t show whether or not the learners attained empowerment.
