Impossible sauvage urbain

Abstract : "Numerous surveys and interviews conducted by the author among city dwellers in large French cities between 1992 and 2020 show that the wild is opposed to the domestic. According to our results, the animal and plant species qualified as wild are so according to a gradation which owes much to the places where they live. Therefore, we believe that the idea that it would be possible to make the city wild is based on a misunderstanding of urban history, particularly in Europe. The city appears as an essentially human space where animal and plant nature has been progressively domesticated or excluded. However, the recent development of alliances between wild species and city dwellers, due in particular to the development of environmental mobilizations, testifies to a renewal of the link between the domestic and the wild, which engages a reinvention of the city as an ecological space. These socio-environmental communities are building new immune systems in a world described as Anthropocenic, synonymous with the age of mankind, but which could be described as Urbanocene, in reference to the place taken by cities at the beginning of the 21st century."
