Écologie, solidarité, en milieu de cité : des pistes d'étude sur le métissage

Abstract : Based on an ethnographic approach and a transdisciplinary contribution, my thesis research is called “Environment, solidarity, in rundown suburb environment : study approaches on cultural hybrides”. It aims at investigating phenomenon of cultural hybridity (that is indeterminate processing of social relations) linked with the environmental and solidarity values. The terrain of my research was cantered on the interactions involved within the social spheres –activities– of the charity « la Maison pour agir », located in the suburbs of Vaulx-en-Velin. Spheres such as participative and educational workshops on protection of the environment, shared meals and actions to raise awareness for fostering change in neighbourhood-based life. The research arises from a bid to confront epistemological methods of ethnography to modernity. The focal point of the research being, an innovative reflection on cultural hybridity, central to the studied reality and multiculturalism as the main pillar of the thesis structure, in a 3-fold perspective, that is epistemological, methodological and ethical. Concretely, the fieldwork is focused on the researcher’s participant observation paced by ordinary interactions and research interviews, and articulated on a double position of ethnographer and volunteer. A single entity investigating these outlooks of the various categories of players involved in the charity projects (volunteers and employees, residents, the researcher himself), which are confronted and decontextualized in the social surrounding context. Environment and solidarity are apprehended such as ideological vectors, beliefs, practices, whose meaning depends on fieldwork interlocutors’ thinking and on ways of their interactions. This teaches complex reality even on a micro-local scale. It especially implies social relations’ processing, depending on their own environmental aims : according to situations, their study reveals the features of an urban panorama marked by symbolic links failure, alliances and conflicts, evolutions and regressions, but also by traces of social link transformation (at research interviews, educational workshops), through the fate of local history. One of the most relevant aspects of this research is that environment and solidarity, by proactive values belonging to association institutional core, and by cross of different social ‘categories’, show (and become) an arena of mutually conflicting representations. In facts, as oxymoron, environment also occurs as ‘anti-environment’, and solidarity as a kind of control, a loss of symbolic link, or even as the rejection of solidarity; by this point of view, more than connections, there are gaps dividing groups of local players beeing destined at not to meet and not to ‘cross breed’.
