Visiter Auschwitz contre le déni de la Shoah. L'expérience de l'évidente matérialité de l'histoire

Abstract : If the statement of the existence of the Holocaust at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Museum stresses a reality, it also has a performative effect, which is to oppose denial – be it passive (skepticism in the face of horror) or active denial (refusal of the reality of the event). This effect is produced when visitors have the feeling that the story presented is a statement, thanks to the presence of material traces and the institutional recognition of the Memorial-Museum. Without questioning its historical seriousness or the legitimacy of this effect, this perception can be criticized from an epistemological point of view. It is indeed based on the oversight of the work of historians and museographers. Opposition to denial is produced by the communication device of Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial-Museum, so that the experience of authenticity founding opposition to denial of the Holocaust is in fact a dramatization of authenticity.
