The oration Audivi of Enea Silvio Piccolomini (Pius II) : Latin text, English translation, Introduction and Notes
Michael Cotta-Schønberg1

This publication contains the Latin text of Enea Silvio Piccolomini's oration Audivi to the Council of Basle on May 15, 1436, concering the choice of venue for the Reunion Council between the Latin Church and the Greek Church. The speaker argued for the city of Pavia in the territory of the Duke of Milan. The context of the oration was marked by the tensions between conciliarism and the papacy, between Italy and Northern Europe, and between the Italian powers including the Papal State. Piccolomini used the occasion to demonstrate to the Council Fathers his rhetorical skills and humanist learning. A number of observations in the oration have significance in other contexts, i.e. the humanist debate on the origins of the Turks.
