PREHISTORIC AND PROTOHISTORIC ENCLOSURES OF CORSICA - AN ATTEMPT OF A COMPARISON WITH SOME SITES OF TUSCANY

LES ENCEINTES PRE- ET PROTOHISTORIQUES DE CORSE - ESSAI DE COMPARAISON AVEC QUELQUES SITES DE TOSCANE

Résumé

Starting from the 5th millennium, the presence of enclosures has been observed in the Western Mediterranean basin. Used to enclose an
area with various functions between the Middle Neolithic and the Iron Age, the enclosure can be a ditch, a bank or a dry-stone wall, like
in Corsica. This study focuses on the evolution of dry-stone techniques applied to the construction of enclosures. Thanks to the dating
obtained during excavations on certain sites, a typo-chronology has been developed and provides information about occupation of sites
which are characterized by the only presence of dry-stone structures. With the aim of applying the methodology of study of the Corsican
enclosures to those of Tuscany, the geographical framework of this study was extended to include all Tuscany. The results of this study
show that the low representation of dry-stone enclosures in the Tuscan mainland archeological literature was confirmed by surveys
conducted in the south of the region, in particular in the valley of Ombrone, even though some stone enclosures were found in the Tuscan
archipelago. Moreover, in Northern Corsica, during the Middle Neolithic and Final Neolithic/Calcholithic, the large proportion of
enclosures appear to be delimiting habitat areas, and to have been constructed using techniques developed locally. On the other hand, in
Southern Corsica, during the Bronze Age, big stone blocks carefully dressed were used to construct enclosures, which are believed to be
centers for the production and transformation of various food products. These enclosures were built using techniques that are found in
nearby Sardinia. The use of tools made of bronze for the extraction and cutting up of the rock may explain the differences observed
between the constructive techniques employed during the Neolithic and the Bronze Age.
Bronze.
